Re: Commonly Used Races and Other Interesting Stuff.
Ever heard of a Kaisharga?
Its a very ancient lich that resembles a mummy. Numerous psychic abilities, very deadly. Its found in Athas.
What about Mind Flayers? Squid headed outsiders with the devastating mind blast ability. At least thats what it was called in D&D1. Basically it released a lot of their psy stat at once to perform numerous different psy-attacks all at once on a single target. They were an evil brain eating race, and used numerous magical items.
Of course for a real thrill, introduce something like the beholder or the aboleth to an otherwise foreign campaign. How would space marines react to an army of beholders being on a planet? Imperial guards? Eldar? Beholders, if you didn't know, were a flying very VERY smart race of spherical beings with numerous eyes but no limbs. They had a mouth and organs and etc, but they were basically a ball of tentacles that ended in eyes. You never wanted to be a magic user and fight one, because they had the dreaded (and not to common) anti-magic beam. It didn't do any HP damage, but it wiped out a mage's spell usages. Also at more intense settings it wiped out magic charges in enchanted objects, and could (rarely) disenchant outright.
Edit: The Beholders numerous eyes fired many beams, it was only the main eye that used anti-magic. Other eyes used things like fireblast, instant lightning, deathbolt (instant death if it hit), and slow petrify. The d&d info-book "I, Tyrant" from TSR covered how to assign the eyes specific abilities and how to roll up beholder individuals.
The Aboleth was a dread horror to fight too, because it was big enough that it could attack more than one target at a time if it was an adult, as well as having numerous psychic abilities. It was a huge eel like monster with numerous eyes and thick layers of blubber. I believe it had 4 tentacles, but it may have had 8 and had 4 on each side.
